Traditional universities have largely relied on lectures to deliver learning with some electronic material provided to back up the lecture. With a ground-up online university such as the University of Tauranga we have developed our online educational materials to ensure they encompass all the learning goals and online lectures have never been required. With the pandemic requiring many universities to switch to online learning traditional universities have rushed to provide online material often falling short of covering all the required learning material ior being produced to a sub-standard level. Most educators would agree that the purpose of lectures is to lay foundations as the student works through the subject. Good lecturers know their students and develop their lectures according to the students’ needs. Our learning contract with you ensures we know you, know your learning style and provide you will the support as you work through the online material.
We do also recognise the importance of peer-to-peer discussions, many adult learners favour discusasion as an instructional strategy and we recognise the support freinds and colleagues can provide. Our private forums provide you with the ability to discuss areas where you need further assistance and will be viewed by other students and teachers to provide the support you need and your learning contract can be tailored to ensure you have the correct amount of real-life support required.
